This is a new trend in the present and future time in Internet advertising.
Local ad spending is growing much faster than overall Internet advertising.
New research from Borrell Associates Inc. shows an overall increase of 28.7 percent in local ad spending -- twice the growth rate of overall Internet advertising.
The company projects strong growth in virtually all U.S. cities, with some very aggressive -- even startling -- revenue projections for local Internet operations that are the beneficiaries of this growth. Some newspaper and TV operations are projecting 80 percent to 100 percent increases in Internet revenues for 2004.
The Albany-Schenectady-Troy, N.Y., DMA topped the list for growth projections with a 101.3 percent increase in local Internet ad spending, while only one market, Ft. Smith-Fayetteville, Ark., is projected to see a decrease. Spending in the Albany DMA will go from $20 million in 2003 to $40 million this year, catapulting the region's rank from No. 32 last year to No. 14 this year.
Albany's growth may be attributed to a projected influx of high-tech industries after the relocation of Semetech, a microchip and nanotechnology firm. The region has also seen job growth at triple the average U.S. rate in the leisure and hospitality and financial services sectors -- both very strong segments for local Internet advertising. operations.
That study shows average budget increases of approximately 35 percent.
